According to our dash cam expert
With the Mio MiVue 798 Dual Dashcam, you can capture your car ride in case an accident happens. The camera on your windshield records in Quad HD resolution and the rear camera in Full HD. The camera has a viewing angle of 150 degrees. That means the lanes next to your are also visible. Thanks to the driving aids, you get a notification when you drive too fast or approach a speed camera. In addition, the dashcam warns you when you leave your lane, show signs of fatigue, or are in danger of a head-on collision. The G sensor detects violent movements, such as when you're in an accident or loose control of the wheel. In that case, the footage is stored securely, so it doesn't get overwritten. You can easily send the footage to your smartphone via the built-in WiFi.

After a nasty traffic twist decided to go for a Dashcam. Front and back, that is.
Delivery was as promised, within a day. I immediately bought the maximum storage: 128 GB. Which is not mentioned anywhere, as far as I could tell: that is for both cameras (so the rear camera doesn't need a separate SD card, but stores its data on the card in the front camera).
Installation was a minor crisis. The supplied "Y-splitter" is an ugly thick cable and it is immediately attached to the front camera. Without it, it hangs ugly in plain sight. After some YouTube searching I discovered that you can quite easily frut that cable "above the ceiling" (ie between the window and the decorative plate above your head). The other cables (to the cigarette lighter and to the rear camera) can also work away with some fiddling by pushing them into the gaps between the various decorative plates/rubbers that our car has. But no guarantee that this will work with every car (we have a Mazda).
Just made the first rides and viewed the images: everything is stored in neat folders: Event, Parking, Normal and Photo. For us only Event is important (on collision it automatically creates a file and puts it in this folder that is not overwritten) and Normal (that's where all "normal" movie images are put). In these two folders there are again two sub-folders "F" and "R" (front and rear camera). It turns out that the front camera stores film images in 3-minute segments of 403MB each and the rear camera does the same, but with 270MB per 3 minutes. A quick calculation (hopefully I'm not telling me): back + front = 225MB/minute. So with our 128GB we can record more than 9 hours of images before the camera overwrites old images. Image quality is what you'd expect: very sharp as far as objects are reasonably close (and they are in the event of a collision). The rear camera is a bit grainy, but number plates are also very legible at speed difference.
A nice camera, but for the money that is of course also possible. I think it's good value for money.

I expected that I would have to connect the device to either my phone or the router (which are 4 meters away from the fixed parking spot of the car) But it's the other way around. The dashcam is its own router.
So I can't log in via my PC, (I was told over the phone.) I would also get an improved user manual from the company that trades this product in the Netherlands. Heard nothing more either.
Service from Mio, however, does not comply with this
The product is good. Just not if you want to use the wifi with it

I bought the Mio MiVue 798 Dual because it seemed like the best option within the budget. The camera has beautiful quality, the buttons and menus are simple and clear. There are many options such as automatic recording, flash cameras, choosing between front and back, image off or on, take a photo, etc. It just does what it's supposed to do.
However, the cigarette lighter is really a downside. The cable does not always stay in place. There is also no charger for charging the dashcam outside the car. Especially the first time it took a very long time before the battery was full for that reason.
The mobile app is sometimes a little… well. It works when you get the hang of it, but you don't have to disconnect from the camera when the app is on and make sure you're on the right WiFi network. Takes a bit of trying, but in the end it works as it should when you need the images.

In Germany, it's not allowed to use the continuous recording mode of your dashcam. So use a dashcam that records and overwrites short fragments. In addition, you're not allowed to publish the footage publicly because of privacy reasons. The footage you record is suitable as evidence for the police and the courts in case of an accident or other crime, for example.
