decent performance for the price

I am quite satisfied with the JBL Tune 760NC headphones, but I do have a few points of criticism. It's because my expectations were set too high by what I've read about ANC (Active Noise Cancelling). I want to share my experiences so that others have the right expectations.

I had the impression that with ANC you no longer hear outside noise. That turns out not to be true. As soon as you put on the headphones, half of the outside noise is muted, as with all over-ear headphones. A test with a vacuum cleaner shows that once the ANC kicks in, half of the remaining noise is eliminated. You will therefore continue to hear roughly a quarter of the outside noise. Enough to have a conversation provided you turn the music down. Someone reported that ANC doesn't work until you turn on the music. That's not true: ANC works immediately. ANC appears to dampen frequencies in the midrange in particular. Higher frequencies are simply passed through. But they are (partially) mechanically damped by the ear cups.

The headphones are good, I would have liked slightly larger earcups to let them fall well over the ear, but with a bit of arranging it is possible. The material feels nice, but gets a little sweaty after a while. I don't want it on my head for more than an hour. For me that is enough.

The sound is pleasant. Some testers point out that JBL always gives a heavy bass, but that does not appear to be so emphatic that it is disturbing. More troubling is that the performance at high tones is really bad. I miss nice percussion sounds in the music. And that turns out to be true.
