The JBL Xtreme 5 is a large speaker with even bigger sound. The built-in light strips are a nice addition that give the speaker a futuristic look. Due to its large size, the speaker feels heavy when I lift it for a long time.
Powerful sound
The speaker delivers powerful sound. When I turn the volume down to a third, the music already sounds clear throughout my entire living room and kitchen. Fortunately, the speaker also sounds good at low volume, which is why I use it for background music during drinks. I find that the speaker delivers full sound at any volume. With the various equalizer settings, I emphasize certain tones. For instance, with the Energetic setting, I hear solid bass tones and clear vocals. When I use the speaker during drinks, I choose the JBL Signature or Chill setting. With these settings, the sound is balanced and pleasant to listen to for extended periods. I do not use the Vocal setting for music, as the sound then sounds a bit tinny. I do like this setting for podcasts, however, because voices sound clearer. Built-in Light Strips
The built-in light strips are a new addition to the JBL Xtreme line. It is a nice detail that creates a futuristic look. The top light strip changes when I adjust the volume. I think it is a fun addition, but I cannot clearly see what the volume level is. In the JBL Portable app, I choose from various light themes and colors. For instance, I choose the Loop, which makes the light move in a circle. Personally, I like Neon the best, because the lights are then a beautiful blue-green color.
Easy to Carry
The speaker is large, but I can easily lift it using the included shoulder strap. I can adjust the strap so that I carry it over my shoulder or use it as a long handle. If I lift the speaker using the shoulder strap as a long handle, it feels heavy after carrying it for a while. I carry it comfortably for longer if I wear it over my shoulder. Without the shoulder strap, I cannot lift the speaker easily.
