According to our mirrorless camera expert
The Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 + 12-32mm F3.5-5.6 is suitable for the advanced street and nature photographer. Despite the small size of the 12-32 lens, both vast landscapes and tall buildings will effortlessly fit in its frame. You can photograph from various positions with the tiltable viewfinder. You can take clear images in the evenings or in dark streets, thanks to the high ISO setting of 25,600. You can shoot handheld photographs for longer in dark circumstances, thanks to the 5-axis image stabilization that reduces motion blur. In addition to photography, you can also use the camera to record 4K images. With 30 frames per second, you can create fluid recordings. This device is also suitable for vloggers: the tiltable screen lets you see what you're recording.

I've had a Lumix GF1 for years and I'm still very happy with it. Compact, solidly built, easy to use and despite the low 12MP it still takes very nice photos. Every year I see and read about the improvements in digital photography and I thought: Time for a step with a new mirrorless camera.
I have lenses for the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) platform so I went there first. Olympus and Panasonic make good use of the MFT platform with their fast lenses, good quality cameras that are small and ambitious. Nowadays you can also buy nice mirrorless toppers from Sony, Fiji, Nikon and Canon that have exceptionally good digital sensors (full frame and APS-C) but the lenses are still too big for me. I want something that I can take with me on a trip and that is suitable for street and nature photography.
This quickly resulted in two types of MFT models:
The GX9 is very solid, compact and sturdy and feels like a quality product. A big improvement over my old GF1. The buttons are easily accessible and the screen tilts up or down and not out. I prefer this mode to shoot photos discreetly and quickly. They could also have made the Lumix logo more discreet for me. The GX9 is already very stylish and simple in shape so an all black look would have been even nicer in my eyes. The quality of the 20MP is remarkably good and with a sea of options of top lenses, you can deliver high-quality photos. I myself have the very handy Panasonic 42.5 mm f1.7, which delivers excellent results on the GX9. With such digital systems you often see extra options such as filters and effects that I end up making little use of. Although I have not had the GX9 for long, I notice that I have already shot quite a few black and white photos. The L.Monochrome D mode with a film noise effect is very addictive and surprisingly effective. A downside that requires some attention in use is the short battery life. Tip: buy an extra battery. The camera is also not weatherproof. The average smartphone is now splash waterproof, so it is a pity that the GX9 is not. I would have paid more for it.
There is some grumbling about the electronic viewfinder in the various reviews. For me, it turns out to be very practical to use and even a necessity with a lot of or annoying light. It is true that the viewfinder is not very large and the quality could have been a little better, but the fact that it is tiltable makes up for a lot. In addition to the image quality, constant Bluetooth connection for automatic geotagging, among other things, the tiltable viewfinder is what makes this camera so special and usable.
What I can also put under the plus column is the quality of the 12-32mm kit lens. I was concerned about the possible quality of such a tiny zoom lens. However, the sharpness, contrast and color that you get from this zoom lens is perfectly fine. In addition to the built-in stabilization of the camera, the lens also has stabilization itself, so in practice I have little or no trouble with the relatively small aperture (3.5/5.6).
For what I want to do with this camera, there are few options that do it better. A small handy system where I enjoy taking good quality photos. I have a feeling that the GX9, like my old GF1, will be buddies for a long time to come.
