How do you choose a breast pump?
Do you want to have a supply of breast milk, or do you want to keep your milk production constant now that you're working again? A breast pump is the product you need. But how do you choose the breast pump that suits you best? We found that out for you.
Choose breast pump
When you choose a breast pump, it's important that you ask yourself the following:
- Which type of breast pump do you need?
- Do you want a single or dual breast pump?
- Where do you want to use the breast pump?
Which type of breast pump do you need?
Electric pump
An electric pump always makes noise, but it's easier to use than a manual pump. The motor creates a vacuum and pumps the milk that way. You only have to keep the pump in the right spot. Another advantage of an electric pump is that you can easily adjust the suction power. This way, you can adjust the pump as you like.
Manual pump
As the name says, you operate a manual pump by hand. To pump the milk, you have to squeeze the lever. That's tiresome for your hand, so it's mainly suitable if you pump occasionally. For example, as a backup for your electric pump or as a light small pump for on the go. An advantage of a manual pump is the noise level. A manual pump is much more silent than an electric pump.
Do you need a single or double breast pump?
Double breast pump
With a double breast pump, you can pump both breasts at once. That way, you can have a larger amount of milk in a shorter time and be done faster. A large advantage of a double breast pump is that the milk production increases. That way, you can easily make a stock of milk. That's useful if your baby has to drink when you're working again.
Single breast pump
You can only pump 1 breast at a time with a single breast pump. This means that pumping takes longer with a double breast pump. A single breast pump is mostly useful if you sometimes leave your house and only want to have a small amount of milk at home.
Where do you want to use the pump?
Which breast pump suits you best also depends on the location where you want to use it. If you only use it at home, an electric pump with a cord is suitable. Do you want to use the pump on the go? A manual pump or a breast pump with a battery or batteries is a better choice. Because you're not bound to a socket, you can also pump in your car when you're on a daytrip.
