Expert review Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra

In July 2024, Samsung launched a new smartwatch: the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra. This large smartwatch is sturdy, powerful, and angular. This is new for a Samsung Watch. First impression of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra

As soon as I take this smartwatch out of the packaging, the new design is the first thing I notice. Up to this point, Samsung Galaxy smartwatches have always been round. The Galaxy Watch Ultra is square. Thanks to this angular design with rounded corners, I think the Galaxy Ultra looks nice. The large action button on the side is also new. This is also the largest Samsung watch to date. That's because the screen is 47mm large and the watch case is added to that.

Battery life of 2 to 3 days

The Galaxy Watch Ultra has the same battery life as the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. This means the battery life isn't much longer than 2 to 3 days. I think that's a bit of a bummer. The watch case got much bigger, so it would've been great if there was a larger battery in it. Thanks to the new chip, the Watch Ultra does work more energy-efficiently. I still have to charge the smartwatch every 2 days if I've worked out with it. Otherwise, it'll be empty halfway through the day. The battery does last longer when I turn the location off.

Many sports functions

The Samsung Watch Ultra is especially for outdoor athletes. I went running and rollerblading with this Ultra. It tracks both workouts very accurately. I can find an extensive overview of all my data in the Samsung Health app on my smartphone. A new function of this Ultra is the 'multisport' program. You can train for a triathlon with this sports profile, for example. I set up my own sports profile with the sports I want to do in a row. At the touch of a button, I can switch sports during my workout or competition.

Conclusion

Are you an avid athlete who also wants the latest smartwatch functions? The Samsung Galaxy Ultra suits you. I really like the design of the new Galaxy Watch Ultra. It's truly different from what I'm used to from Samsung. The titanium watch case is strong and has a robust look. I do think it's unfortunate that the battery life hasn't really improved.
