I had been looking for the possibility to digitize old photos, negatives and slides for a long time. After snooping around on the internet for a long time, my eye fell on 2 Sanners: the 9000F Mark II from Canon and the V550 from Epson. The possibility of Digital ICE dust filter (would not work as well for black and white films and Kodachrome films) and the reviews on "alatest.nl" (score of 9.2 against 9.0 for the 9000F) were the deciding factor in choosing for the slightly more expensive V550. Ordered on Sunday evening, delivered on Monday (super). By Monday evening I had already scanned the first slides and negatives. During this 'experiment' it soon became apparent that the standard dust filter did not remove all dust particles and fibers, but after making the scan again with Digital ICE the result was astonishing: no more fibers and dust visible! Now I scan everything with ICE. This takes much longer, but I want a perfect result. Recommendation: regularly clean the glass plates with a suitable cloth! The settings I'm scanning with so far are:
With these settings, scanning negatives takes 35 minutes for 10 negatives.

If you are looking for a good option for scanning slides and negatives and you do not require speed and super high resolution, then this scanner is your answer. After a bad experience with another small scanner from a German brand, this Epson is highly recommended. For quality and for convenience. In the automatic mode the method is "arms crossed" to reasonable quality (a bit too little resolution for a professional), but in the professional mode that can also be provided! Only the automatic dust removal I have not been able to observe. Also the automatic color correction is sometimes incorrect. The advice is therefore: carry out the color correction yourself with a professional package. In any case, the resolution is good! It just might take a little while. Four slides at once is possible. Two strips of negatives also go at once. The slides and negatives are retrieved by the software itself and can then be individually selected, corrected and scanned. In short: a great scanner for an attractive price!
