The Asus RT-AC66U is a router for small houses and apartments. With this router, you stream your favorite series in HD and listen to your favorite music all day long. The image says it all, "Award Winner" and for good reason. The signal goes right through two reinforced concrete floors of our student flat, the router is super easy to set up, very fast and also looks very nice.
We have been using this router for three weeks and man what a difference compared to the TP-Link (Archer C7) we had before. Both networks (2.4 and 5 GHz) are extremely stable and so far we have not had to reboot the device. This is despite the fact that almost 200GB of data has already been consumed via the 100/100 surfing line.
TV in our building is controlled via the ipcast protocol, something this router also supports via both cable and wifi without stuttering (via wifi this seems to be quite unique because of the continuous signal that has to be passed). For this I first had to dive into a menu, but the setting was quickly found via the built-in help function of Asus. Super handy, you can hover your mouse over almost anywhere and there will be a short description of what that one strange abbreviation/option does exactly.
In terms of speed, the new AC standard is really amazingly good, wireless speedtest achieves the maximum speed of our internet provider almost everywhere in the house. Two floors up, the measured speed is a bit lower, about 4MB/s net (32 mbit) but still fine for browsing/youtube/etc.
Handy is the built-in print server with which I was able to share my printer on the entire network. For this you can simply continue to use the current drivers, so all setting windows on your computer remain the same. There is also a built-in USB media/file/ftp server, which I have not tested myself yet.
The router can also create guest networks, again on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, that are separate from your own network. This works great, and is ideal for making sure your friends don't just airplay vague things to your TV and for sharing your connection with your neighbors ;).
There is one point that I have a bit of trouble with myself and that is the placement of the ports on the router, which are on the top ... Why Asus has chosen this is not entirely clear to me, you now have to so much time blowing the dust out of the unused network ports. They have this shortcoming in the successor (the AC68), but that is again a tad more expensive.
In short, we are very satisfied with this router. It is fast, stable and good looking. Indeed more expensive than the TP-Link C7 which has the same specs, but the performance combined with the intuitive software that Asus has put on this router are well worth the money.

Since I replaced my default router for this Asus, my network has improved in every way.
First of all, the device is very solid on the outside. Nicely designed and not too big and flashy.
The web interface is very user-friendly and contains all the options you could wish for. The device is regularly updated with new firmware and for the tweakers among us there is also custom firmware available with even more options. The general setup and firmware update were also a breeze.
The first thing you notice when you start using the router is the good range and throughput of WiFi. Both 2.4GHz and 5GHz (5G) were about 3x faster in my home than before. A real difference from before. In addition, it is very stable, where I used to lose the wireless signal, I have not experienced this after 3 weeks.
In addition, I configured things like DHCP, VPN, and UPNP and firewall rules in no time. VPN also has the option to use OpenVPN as a VPN server. This has the advantage that you can very easily set up a VPN connection to your home network with good authentication and encryption through. the OpenVPN client available for many platforms.
All in all, a top product that I hope to enjoy for many years to come.
