According to our doorbell expert
With the Ring Video Doorbell, you'll always know who's in front of your door. Connect the doorbell via WiFi and watch, listen, and talk along in real time. Whether you're on the couch or at work, via the app on your smartphone you can always see what is going on in front of your door. Thanks to the infrared function, you can see who is at the door even when it's dark. The camera automatically takes a screen shot when there is movement in a 9 meter radius and you get a notification via the app. That way, you always know what to expect before you open the door. It's also possible to save the recorded footage in the Cloud. You do pay a monthly fee for this.
Note: you need a Ring Protect subscription to use all options, like saving and sharing footage. After the 30-day trial period, this costs €3 per month.

Functionality
Our house contains all the necessary home automation in and around the house. We have a production space in the attic and because of this we often miss a postman or a customer because we do not hear the bell because of the machines. Because of this, I had been interested in the smart doorbells for a while.
The choice fell on the Ring because of good reviews worldwide and the installation and ease of use.
What is immediately noticeable is that everything, but really everything, is included to properly hang the product on wood or rock. In the end I did use some of my own tools because this is just a bit better quality, the supplied screwdriver is quite slippery so you can't use force to screw in the screws properly.
The Ring is a fairly large device, but I don't see that as disturbing.
I have connected the Ring to the existing wiring of the "normal" bell, which is powered by an 8v bell transformer. As a result, the Ring remains powered and it does not run on the battery, even if the "normal" bell continues to ring when you ring the bell.
Setting up the Ring on the WiFi is done in 2 steps, you make a direct WiFi connection via telephone to Ring, after which you set up the actual connection to the WiFi access point via the software. Using the app and setting it up is child's play.
The Ring comes with a 30-day trial subscription for cloud storage. After this you have to deposit 3 dollars a month or 30 dollars at once for a year to save all motion detection and ringing moments. I don't think this is a problem but it could be a disadvantage for others.
The image quality is just good, I can see exactly who is at the door and what they are doing. Well-known people are also immediately recognizable. A good WiFi signal is really a must, otherwise things will go wrong quickly, I have done some tests with this. A disadvantage is that no actual images of the ring are used on the Ring's website and all promotional videos. The image of the Ring is really a fish eye image and therefore really walks around and not from corner to corner like in the movies. Here again, I knew this in advance and don't see this as a disadvantage.
The motion detection function also works very well, you can set the distance to which Ring should detect movement, we have a front yard of about 3 meters and have set the ring to about 2 meters. When someone walks past the house, nothing happens. As soon as someone enters the gate, I immediately receive a notification and then you also get the opportunity to take the "conversation" and talk to the person who is standing in front of the door without ringing the bell.
All in all, I'm happy with the Ring. It does exactly what I expect.

Having had this Ring WiFi video doorbell for a week, it was striking that the doorbell was delivered complete, even with the "necessary" tools.
The installation is very simple and the best thing is that this doorbell can be connected to the existing wiring of the doorbell that is already present. As a result, the doorbell is continuously provided with a so-called trickle charge for its internal battery and the existing bell in the home also works (but first check the website Ring for exactly what support is offered).
The doorbell is not the smallest, so check whether it fits in the desired position before purchasing. The internal battery makes it possible to place it in a location without existing wiring.
Support from the manufacturer, via Ring.com is excellent via the chat option you will get quick answers to all your questions and you will also be able to find information about the development of the software and firmware. For example, the on-demand video option will soon also be available for the doorbell.
The motion detection option works fine and is easily adjustable, especially useful if you don't physically press the doorbell button. You then have the option to use a paid Cloud storage for all recorded images. After installation you get one (1) month free. Here too it can be noted that this function works well and quickly, you can also view these images via the App.
A good internet connection with an upload of at least 1Mb is required.
Experienced from my own experience that the doorbell stopped functioning spontaneously, after contact with Cool Blue it could be exchanged without any problem, but still made use of the support of Ring.com. Here again quickly and neatly helped.
Solution of a stuck Ring doorbell:
Detach the doorbell from the base plate, then press and hold the orange button on the back for thirty (30) seconds to reset.
If this does not work....... then press and hold the orange button on the back together with the doorbell button on the front for thirty (30) seconds to reset the doorbell to factory settings.
This last option offered the solution!
All in all, I am a very satisfied user and looking forward to future doorbell updates.
Jack.

The concept is of course very nice and cool. But the creators still have a lot of work to do. The technology is arranged in such a way that the data first runs over American servers and then back again. In any case, this causes a delay in the signal. Dependent on WiFi and internet connection, some more than others. That is of course not the intention if you want to speak to someone directly or if you only have a picture when someone just leaves with impatience. In addition, the camera of the bell is not directly accessible, but only when there is movement or, of course, when someone rings the doorbell. Having access to the camera at any time would be a plus. The makers have instead opted for a closed system. In addition to a hefty purchase price, the revenue model behind the bell also includes a subscription that must be taken out in order to be able to see the videos again. That 3 euros per month doesn't seem like much, but of course it quickly adds up in a year.
All in all, a very expensive product that certainly needs further development. For the gadget freaks of course quite nice to show off.
