According to our Bluetooth speaker expert
The shock and waterproof design makes this speaker suitable for outdoor use.
You can create a lightshow in your room with this speaker.
You can charge your smartphone via the USB port on the speaker.
The speaker lasts 24 hours with average use, but 14 hours at high volume and use of the lights.
Bring the party with you anywhere with the Sony SRS-XB33. The battery of this robust Bluetooth speaker lasts 24 hours. The design and is water and shockproof, so you don't have to worry about your speaker getting damaged when it falls or when you jump in the pool. The speaker has line lighting on both sides. These lights flash on the beat of the music. This way, the party mood is set right away. Use Party Connect to connect multiple speakers to each other for extra powerful sound. Control the music and lighting via the Sony Music Center app or the Fiestable app. Is your smartphone empty Thanks to the integrated charger function, you can conect it to the speaker. This way, the party can go on.

Taken on holiday and used in the garden until now. A very handy box for on the go. The quality of the music is very good. It has good bass, but can also be put in live mode. This makes it very varied in my opinion. Via bluethoot it connects smoothly with the smartphone and I was able to play my playlist from spotify within 5 minutes. There is an app that also makes it easy to connect to Deezer, Spotify, etc. In addition, you can manage the lighting with the app. At first it was on with all the lights flashing on the bass, but that's not for me. So quickly put on a solid color with the wire lighting. There are 3 types of lighting. I think this benefits the design. It is a robust, sturdy and in my opinion quality-radiating box. I was a bit skeptical at first, but it is highly recommended. It is waterproof so you can take it with you to the pool and even the sea. It is an extra feature that it can withstand salt water, I have not tried this yet. ;). It can also be coupled with other boxes from the series, which makes it also nice for pairing with friends at parties or just if you buy 1 or 2 for your home. Party mode!!! Highly recommended for me, I now have it with me on holiday, listening to my own music.

When I unpacked the box, I was pleasantly surprised. Box and accessories look good. Connecting to a phone went very smoothly; I don't think NFC was used here even though it was turned on on the phone. You can ask yourself how often you use the NFC feature. This brings me to my first plus point: connecting via Bluetooth is excellent. Way better than other Bluetooth boxes I've had. One push of a button on the box, Bluetooth on the phone and it's connected. Perhaps there could be cost/weight savings by omitting the NFC.. Me, and the people who have used it, just connected via Bluetooth. NFC is in my opinion an unnecessary feature.
Being used to a JBL Charge, I still have to get used to the fact that the volume buttons (all buttons, by the way) cannot be operated by touch and are not illuminated. It is almost impossible to turn the volume up/down without picking up the box and looking; it leans back when placed horizontally. This is a major design flaw in my opinion.
The sound quality is superb. At medium to loud volume, the bass is very present; fun for parties. With the Sony app, if you don't like this, you can adjust the high, medium and low tones. So you are not connected to the pre-installed EQ.
The 'Live' function on the box itself gives a very nice sound. Sounds like a boost for the highs and lows, but adds a nice dimension to the music. During my listening time, I actually only listened with the 'Live' function on. At maximum volume, the bass is no longer in proportion to the loud highs. Ideal listening volume for the best sound is about 80-90% I'm guessing.
The box is also equipped with LED (?) lights that you can adjust in the app. Nice, but not necessary. With the bigger brother of this box (XB43) this seems more fun to me; you can really use such a box as a party box. The XB33 is more of a portable box that you can take with you to, for example, the beach, drinks or small get togethers. The lights don't add much in my opinion. They are not bright enough to notice anything in space. I would also just leave this out to save weight and maybe fit bigger speakers in it. Nice feature, but after a week you turn it off. Then you forget that the lights are on it.
In summary: if you are looking for a reasonably portable box that can fill a living room, great box for the price you pay for it. Good bass and music reproduction; nice for a living room. I wouldn't see it as a real party box, the LEDs are too weak for that and the bass at maximum volume is out of proportion to the high tones.

The sound quality is not perfect in itself (see reviews on Rtings, among others), but with an equalizer it can be obtained very well. There is a built-in equalizer, which is good in itself, but you can also use your own equalizer. And then the sound is "impressive" for such a small thing. Same stereo width, which is naturally minimal, but with the DSP ("live") it's just fine.
