According to our router expert
This router sends via the 5Gz band 4800Mbps, which means it's faster than comparable routers.
With a 2.5Gbps WAN port, you can ensure a stable wired connection.
You can mount this router under your desk, so it won't be in the way.
This router doesn't have the 6GHz band that WiFi 6E routers have.
Depending on the size of your house, this router offers coverage on 1 or 2 floors.
You can provide all your games with the fastest WiFi connection with the ASUS RT-AX86U gaming router. This router has WiFi 6, the fastest WiFi version. This allows you to go online up to 5 times faster than with a wireless AC router. On top of that, the router has 1 extremely fast wired connection of 2.5Gbps. This is 2.5 times faster than usual. You can use it to provide the router with super fast internet or to make sure your desktop or NAS has a fast local connection. You can give priority to games in general and your favorite games in particular. That way, you'll always have a fast connection while gaming so that you have an advantage over your opponents. You can easily set this in the ASUS mobile app. Need coverage on multiple floors? Seamlessly connect 2 of these routers using AiMesh.

In itself this is a good router. I was very happy with this until recently. I had an internet connection of 300 Mbps with Quality of Service turned on in the router settings and I got that speed. However, I recently switched to a 1 Gbps connection, and I only got 330 Mbps or so, very disappointing when your speed should actually go x3. After a long search it turned out to be the router. When Quality of Service is on, your internet speed slows down enormously. I'm in conversation with Asus but here are the numbers: No QoS: 950 Mbps (approximately the effective speed of my line). adaptive QoS: 650 Mbps, so 300 Mbps difference, best case with QoS. traditional QoS: 300 Mbps, so 650 Mbps (!!!!) difference, that's huge. Geforce Now QoS: 330 Mbps Bandwidth limiter (even without any actual limits set): 370 Mbps
So keep this in mind if QoS is important to you.

It replaces my Asus RT-AC68U and is (unsurprisingly) a huge improvement, both in terms of speed and range.

Long doubted between the 82 h, the 88 h and this one. In the end it became the RT-AX86U. This router has the same chip as an RT-AX88U and that for a more competitive price. The speed and coverage are fine, where I first needed an extender on the second floor and in the garden for range, this router does not achieve the same speed. Furthermore, this router has a 2.5 Gbps port so that it is prepared for the faster modems. This port can be used as a wan or lan port. All in all a great router!!
