With the Hoya HMC UV, you protect the front element of the lens against dust, scratches, and bumps. The glass has a high light transmission to preserve sharp photos, but it does block UV light. This way, your photos don't become bluish. The HMC UV has a thin aluminum edge, so the filter isn't visible when you use a wide-angle lense. The filter is splash proof, which makes it suitable in bad weather conditions.
