I ended up at LaCie/Seagate customer service (chat) and it soon became clear that this drive cannot be secured with an encryption password. You can secure the drive with Windows Bitlock, and if you use the drive as Time Machine in a Mac then the data is also encrypted but that has nothing to do with the hard disk itself, that can be done with any USB storage. But then you can no longer use the drive between a Windows PC and a Mac environment.

The noise level is acceptable in itself, but the hard disk is constantly switching on and off and then it becomes annoying for me.
