You can't switch between different directional characteristics, so you can't choose which side of the microphone picks up sound.

The RØDE NT1 Signature Series Blue allows you to record sound in great detail. It's a condenser microphone, which means it has a wide frequency range. As a result, it picks up every detail and makes your recording sound realistic. The microphone has a cardioid directional characteristics. It only picks up sound at the front of the microphone, so you hear almost no background noise on your recording. The included pop filter dampens sharp letter and breathing sounds so they don't interfere with your recording. Thanks to the included shock mount, the microphone is also shockproof. If you accidentally bump into it, you won't hear it on your recording.
