My migration from a Synology DS415+ to this Synology DS425+ went smoothly. I transferred the existing WD Red HDDs, and they work in the new NAS (although the drive status remains "Migrated from another system"). If I wanted to add a new WD Red HDD, that's not possible (short of a hack). In that case, I'd have to opt for a Synology HDD.

Transferring drives from the DS415play to the 425+ was easy. They are Seagate and WD drives, so not officially supported by Synology, but they were immediately recognized and migrated.
